Obituary for Alfred C. "Tony" Paytes

Alfred Calvin "Tony" Paytes age 75, of Spotsylvania County Va. died on January 5, 2014 in a Richmond hospital.

Tony had several successful careers in his working life; he spent many years as a car salesman at Purvis Ford, but only during the hunting off-season. 

He began a construction business and built homes until he specialized his business with Al's Guttering. He spent much of his time sponsoring and supporting softball teams, which was a lifelong passion. He was proud of the softball teams that he sponsored, and loved them as family. 

Tony finally found his true calling as a Brother of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and was a member in good standing of many Aeries across the country. He organized and was Charter Member #1 of Fraternal Order of Eagles Spotsylvania Aerie #4391. FOE Aerie #4391 was truly a family home for him, and he served with generosity of heart and spirit. 

At the time of his passing he was serving as secretary of Spotsylvania FOE and FOE treasurer of Virginia.

He served the FOE as both Virginia and Tri-State President, and Grand Aerie National Sports Director, and was elected to both the Virginia and National Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall of Fame.

Tony was a proud supporter of the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Department, Hope House, the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank, and many other local charities. He was involved with many activities, but his life was centered around his family. He gave selflessly of his time and love to his family and friends in a full measure of devotion.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Betty; his loving daughter, Tandi, and her husband Bill Russnak; three cherished grandchildren, Judd, Delaney, and Peyton; his mother, Margaret Chewning Paytes; a brother and his wife, John R. and Margie Paytes; five sisters; Nancy and husband, Lawrence Quann;Alice "Chubby" McWhirt; Margaret "Puggy" Skidmore; Doris and husband, Donnie Via; all of Spotsylvania and Judy P. Johnson of Locust Grove, Va. Tony is also survived by two brothers-in-law; Danny and wife, Claudia Bache of Richmond and Jerry Schaffer of Virginia Beach.
He was the proud uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Tony is preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Ann Paytes and his father, John H. Paytes; a brother Norman "Jackie" Paytes and his wife, Joyce Verling Paytes. Also, a life-long friend and brother-in-law, Jake McWhirt.

A funeral service will be held at Spotswood Baptist Church, 4009 Lafayette Blvd., Fredericksburg, Va. on
Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 10:00 A. M. Interment will follow at Fellowship Baptist Church, 13737 Post Oak Road, Spotsylvania, Va. 22551.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 10, 2014 beginning at 2:00 P. M. until 8:00 P. M. at
